God of War II Becomes PS2 Greatest Hits Title
God of War II, the best game in Sony’s ultra popular franchise, is now a Greatest Hits title for the Playstation 2.
Sony’s second system is no stranger to Greatest Hits. In fact, if you combine the number of Nintendo Gamecube “Player’s Choice” and Xbox “Platinum Hits” titles, it will only result in a small fraction to the number of Greatest Hits title for the Playstation 2. No other system in history offers as many budgeted titles as the Playstation 2.
The God of War series is one of the top first-party franchises for Sony. Other than Gran Turismo, no other Sony Intellectual Property produces the same number of draws as God of War. The franchise’s rise to stardom was unprecedented, considering it only started in 2005 with God of War.
The original God of War made waves when it was first shown. The ambient atmosphere, vulgar violence and Greek settings opened a lot of eyes. Still, there was some doubt since western developers and console action games do not mix. The critics were proven wrong when the game was released. It was everything they have hoped for and then some. Like its sequel, God of War was also a success financially, resulting in it becoming a Greatest Hits title.
The sequel had a lot to live up to. When it was first shown, the franchise shattered the huge expectations right again. No other Playstation 2 games pushed the console to its limit as much as God of War II. It pushed the Playstation 2 so far that some thought that Sony should have put the game on the Playstation 3. It was truly a system-selling game; unfortunately for Sony, pretty much everyone already owns a Playstation 2 when the game came out.
The third game of the series is actually set before the first two games. Not to mention that it was on the PSP. God of War: Chains of Olympus pushed the PSP to the limit the same way God of War II did to the Playstation 2. Like the previous games, it was a system-selling type of game. A Playstation 2 port of God of War: Chains of Olympus is being heavily rumored.
Because of the series’ track record, God of War III is one of the most anticipated Playstation 3 titles. It is scheduled for a 2009 release.
Meanwhile, you can get the Greatest Hits version of God of War II comes with a red “Greatest Hits” label and is selling at a budgeted price of $19.99. The bonus disc, which came with the original version, will be in the Greatest Hits version as well.
