The 10 Highest Selling Games on the Super Nintendo
When video game consoles leaped into the 16 bit age my friend and I each got a different console. My friend decided to go with boring old Mario and the Super Nintendo. I decided to go with the much cooler Sega Genesis. For the next several years we debated which one was better, but there was no debate. The video game sales said it all. Much to my chagrin Super Nintendo was king. These are the 10 highest selling video games on the Super Nintendo.
10th Highest Selling Super Nintendo Game: Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble!
Copies Sold – 2.89 million
All three of the Donkey Kong Country games are among the top 10 selling Super Nintendo games. I’m surprised Nintendo hasn’t made 413 more Donkey Kong Country games since then.
9th Highest Selling Super Nintendo Game: Dragon Quest VI
Copies Sold – 3.2 million
The Dragon Quest series might not be as popular in the United States as the Final Fantasy series but those Japanese fans drove the sales for this roleplaying game.
8th Highest Selling Super Nintendo Game: Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island
Copies Sold – 4 million
Super Mario World was the first big hit on the Super Nintendo so the second Super Mario World was going to sell regardless of how good it was.
7th Highest Selling Super Nintendo Game: Street Fighter II Turbo
Copies Sold – 4.1 million
Those Capcom guys are geniuses. How can we get our dumb Street Fighter II fans to buy the same game again. I’ve got an idea! Let’s add turbo to the title!
6th Highest Selling Super Nintendo Game: Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest
Copies Sold – 4.37 million
I’m not sure how I feel about Diddy Kong. I mean whatever happened to Donkey Kong Jr.?
5th Highest Selling Super Nintendo Game: The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Copies Sold – 4.61 million
I did not love The Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past but others rank it as one of the best video games of all-time so I guess I’m in the minority here.
4th Highest Selling Super Nintendo Game: Street Fighter II
Copies Sold – 6.3 million
Fighting games are not quite as popular today but once upon a time they were all the rage. That is in large part due to Street Fighter and another little game called Mortal Kombat.
3rd Highest Selling Super Nintendo Game: Super Mario Kart
Copies Sold – 8 million
I’m not so crazy about Mario Kart being made over and over again but the original was a pretty sweet idea.
2nd Highest Selling Super Nintendo Game: Donkey Kong Country
Copies Sold – 8 million
For years Donkey Kong was that villain that threw barrels at Mario. But when Donkey Kong got his own game as the hero everybody welcomed him with open arms.
Highest Selling Super Nitntendo Game: Super Mario World
Copies Sold – 20 million
Once again the highest selling video game on this system had the advantage of being the game that was bundled with the console. But once again it would’ve been the highest selling video game even if it wasn’t bundled with the SNES.
