If you grew up in the golden early days of gaming, then you’ll remember exactly what it feels like to keep a close eye on your calendar counting down the days until the next big release date: Now it might be a couple of decades afterwards, but release dates are just as exciting as they used to be back then. Here are some of the most highly anticipated video game releases of 2018 – and why you should be adding them to your shopping list this year.
Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition
The Street Fighter franchise is one of the best-selling game franchises of all time. Almost every gamer will remember playing some or other form of Street Fighter – some remember it best from the arcade where you still had to throw in quarters, others will have all of the games from the franchise as part of their collection already; you should add this one to your list if you are a fan of the franchise already and want to complete your collection, but this one is good enough to be recommended even to players who have never been a fan before.
Dragon Ball Fighter Z
Again, continuing the trend of really damn good fighter games, the next anticipated release for 2018 that’s worth a mention is Dragon Ball Fighter Z: This is great if you’re a general fan of fighter games, and if you love the Dragon Ball Z-series in any form then this is a great follow-up: It takes a lot of inspiration from earlier classic fighter games like Street Fighter and the earlier games in the Dragon Ball Z franchise.
Civilization VI: Rise and Fall
If fighter games aren’t your thing, how about some strategy instead? Civilization VI: Rise and Fall is a great continuation of an excellent series that’s sold thousands of copies to date – and was designed by Sid Meyer, who has been responsible for many other great strategy games before. If you’ve been a fan of games like Caesar, then you’re going to love Civilization – and your collection won’t be complete without Civilization VI.
Far Cry V
The first Far Cry game released in the early 2000’s, and it threw the player right into the action – fighting terrorists in beautifully designed, often tropical locations. The game was absolutely groundbreaking, and if you’ve ever played any of the games in the Far Cry franchise then you’ll know it’s a hell of a lot of fun too. It’s especially great for people who want more than just a shooter and are looking for something that builds on a great storyline at the same time, too: For fans of games like XVIII and Max Payne.
There are many fans of horror and gothic-themed games, and you might have had your bloodlust temporarily satisfied by games like Soul Reaver and Bloodrayne; but you might have also been thinking for several years that the genre is somewhat lacking: There hasn’t really been any great vampire titles. Sharpen your fangs and start up your consoles: Vampyr is one of the most anticipated releases so far, and you won’t be disappointed.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
Call of Duty is one of the best-selling first-person shooter series’ ever, and it’s not hard to see why. The Call of Duty series has put a lot of work, time and design into making sure that it’s a supremely accurate game: You know that they got the smaller details right, such as the gun recoil – and the actual performance of the firearms themselves in a combat situation. Black Ops takes the game to new, exciting and futuristic heights – new wars to fight, and new enemies to fight them against: Did you know that actual, scientific studies have been done to study the correlations between Call of Duty and soldiers experiencing PTSD off the battlefield? When it’s accuracy you want, this is your choice.
Red Dead Redemption 2
There’s just something about zombies that make you want to lock and load. There has been more than enough time between the release of the first Red Dead Redemption and the sequel – and a lot of people are already saying that this is their most anticipated release of the year, expected to reach gamers in the later part of the year. The first Red Dead Redemption was hailed by fans and critics as being one of the most ingenious and original games yet – and we have good reason to believe that the second will be even better.
