Three Things Call of Duty: Black Ops Stole from Other Games
1. Theater Mode from Halo
This is definitely one of the more obvious ideas. Halo was the first game to implement a theater mode for viewing past games. Black Ops copied this idea and used it under the same name and controls as Halo. They even added file share, which is great, but very unoriginal. Treyarch, however, did add one feature to theater. This is the ability to upload theater videos to a user’s Youtube account. This great idea makes montage-making much easier and eliminates the need for a capture card to upload video.
2. Gun Game from Counter Strike
Wager Matches added much more to the Call of Duty multiplayer experience. One of the wager matches, however, wasn’t an idea that came from Treyarch. Another great shooter, Counter Strike, also has a game mode whose idea is the same as Black Ops’ Gun Game. This does make the game more fun and adds to the variety of game modes, but it wasn’t Treyarch’s idea.
3. Guns, Killstreaks, and Gameplay from Modern Warfare 2
As always, the newest installment of Call of Duty stole from its predecessor, Modern Warfare 2. But this time, they used even more than usual from the old version, copying many of Modern Warfare 2’s guns and most of its killstreaks. Although they introduced new guns and killstreaks like the HK-21 and the RC-XD, the game still bears much similarity to Modern Warfare 2 because of all the guns and killstreaks copied. And most obviously, Black Ops’ gameplay is almost exactly the same as Modern Warfare 2’s. The engine, graphics, and general feel of the game do not seem to have been changed whatsoever since its predecessor.
Despite all these non-original ideas, Black Ops is still a very fun game. However, had Treyarch been more creative in the game’s multiplayer, it could have been much better. Treyarch was as creative as ever with the game’s zombie mode, but left multiplayer seriously lacking anything new.
