Top 10 Nintendo Wii Games to Date
The Top 10 Nintendo Wii games to come out for the console so far were fairly easy to pick. The reason for this? Games for the Nintendo Wii tend to either be really good or really terrible with no middle ground. Therefore, because the Nintendo Wii console is relatively new, picking the top 10 Nintendo Wii games to date became a simple exercise of separating the wheat from the chaff. There was a lot of chaff, and very little wheat. Unfortunately for Nintendo Wii owners, the top 10 Nintendo Wii games to date are pretty much the only Nintendo Wii games to date worth buying. Beyond them, the selection of Nintendo Wii games gets pretty thin. So, if you’ve recently acquired a Nintendo Wii and are trying to find out which Wii games are must haves, look no further. Here is my list of the top 10 Nintendo Wii games to date:
10 – Wii Fit
Wii Fit squeaks in the list of the top 10 Nintendo Wii games to date. Much like Wii Sports did when it launched with the console, this innovative title that comes with its own motion sensitive balancing board is capturing the casual, or even the non-gamers who are looking for a new gimmick product to try and stay in shape. Wii Fit has received a lukewarm reception from critics, but this new breed of exercise gamers seems to love it, and that is what is most important, right?
9 – Okami
This entry on the list of the top 10 Nintendo Wii games to date was actually a PS2 game originally, and its tremendous acclaim and its paint-brush themed gameplay made it a natural fit as a port to the Nintendo Wii. Though the game disappointingly didn’t featured any gameplay upgrades compared to the PS2 version, the gameplay is so refreshingly unique and well done that Okami merits a spot as one of the top 10 Nintendo Wii games so far.
8 – Resident Evil 4 – Wii Edition
Another port makes the number 8 spot of the top 10 Nintendo Wii games so far. This survival horror game was a huge hit on both the PS2 and the Nintendo Gamecube. However, fans of the series thought the gameplay could be enhanced by the motion sensitive controls of the Wii. Capcom listened and produced the port at a discounted price, lower than most Nintendo Wii games. If you played it on the PS2 or Gamecube you probably want to skip this version, but if not, it is definitely one of the top 10 Nintendo Wii games so far, and a must buy.
7 – Super Paper Mario
This cool little rpg platformer is a no-brainer for a spot on the list of the top 10 Nintendo Wii games to date. Any game featuring Mario as the centerpiece seems to be of the highest quality. He is Nintendo’s superstar, and Nintendo has earned bucketloads of money from this little plumber on every console so far, and the Wii will be no different. Alternating between 2D and 3D Super Paper Mario for the Wii has unique and fun gameplay elements that keep the game fresh throughout as you once again try to rescue Princess Peach.
6 – Metroid Prime: Corruption
Nintendo has never really been known for its shooters, but one exception to this rule for Nintendo has been the stellar Metroid Prime series, which has evolved from a 2D platformer to the full featured 3D shooter it is today. With the release of the Nintendo Wii and its motion controls, Nintendo fans have been clamoring for shooting games to take advantage of the Wii remote and nunchuck. MP3: Corruption delivers, incorporating the Nintendo Wii controllers into its gameplay better than any shooter to date. Definitely worthy of a spot on the list of the top 10 Nintendo Wii games to date.
5 – Wii Sports
Here we are in the top half of the top 10 Nintendo Wii games and perhaps our first surprise on the list. Wii Sports was bundled with the console (at least in North America), and though simple in execution, it is, in my mind, the reason the Nintendo Wii has attained the success it has so far. Featuring tastes of games like bowling and tennis, it is a casual gamer’s delight and a great introduction to the Nintendo Wii’s controls. It has attracted several new demographics of gamers, including seniors who never would have considered purchasing a game console before. Well done Nintendo!
4 – Mario Kart Wii
Our favorite little plumber makes another appearance on the list of the top 10 Nintendo Wii games so far. The Mario Kart series has been a cult classic for Nintendo, and was one of the titles console owners had been anticipating the most. Mario Kart Wii did not disappoint, bring the same addictive, racing fun that has defined the series. The 16 person online multiplayer is the icing on the cake, since Mario Kart has always been about head to head match-ups. Even if you are not a racing fan, get this game now! It is definitely one of the best Nintendo Wii games so far.
3 – Super Mario Galaxy
Back to back appearances for Mario in the top 10 Nintendo Wii games to date. Nintendo is smart. They knew when they launched the Wii that innovative games featuring their best known characters would be needed to help them regain the market share they lost in the Gamecube generation. Well, Nintendo got it right. This innovative 3D platformer is one of the best Mario games to grace any console. If you own a Wii you have to own this game.
2 – Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Mario isn’t Nintendo’s only cash cow. You knew Link was going to show up somewhere on the list of the top 10 Nintendo Wii games to date. Legend of Zelda has been in Nintendo’s stable since the NES days, and the series has received consistent praise throughout its history as one of the best franchises in video gaming. Zelda for the Wii sets the bar even higher, and is arguably the best Zelda game to date. Its innovative use of the Wii remote make it a great primer for anyone new to the console, and with dozens of hours of gameplay you will certainly get your money’s worth.
1 – Super Smash Brothers: Brawl
Some may be surprised to see a fighting game has out dueled both Mario and Link to claim the number 1 spot on the list of the top 10 Nintendo Wii games so far. To be fair, both Mario and Link are characters in this game, so they can have their moment in the sun. From the day this title was announced for the console there was no more hotly anticipated game. This addictive fighting game is an absolute blast to play with buddies, and Nintendo has always been a strong believer in living room multiplayer. If you get one game for the Nintendo Wii this should be the one.
